Putting SMC Coach Hire in The Driving Seat

How SEO, digital PR and link building helped a national coach operator grow commercial search visibility

SMC Coach Hire operates in one of the UK’s most competitive transport markets, competing for high-intent coach and minibus hire searches across locations nationwide.

Our campaign combined commercial SEO, content development, technical improvements, digital PR and link building to increase visibility where it matters most: the searches made by people actively looking to book transport.

Campagin Focus

Increase nationwide visibility for commercially valuable coach and minibus hire searches, while strengthening brand authority through national press coverage and high-quality links.

Campaign Snapshot

Self-Publishing Advice Centre gives independent authors trusted guidance, resources and support at every stage of their publishing journey.

Working across SEO, content strategy, conversion rate optimisation and email marketing, the campaign is focused on turning existing authority, search visibility and high-value editorial content into a more measurable lead-generation and membership acquisition engine.

The Challenge

Compete with paid ads & household names

SMC Coach Hire had a strong service offering and nationwide coverage, but its organic visibility did not yet reflect the scale of the business or the number of locations it could serve.

The market is fiercely competitive. Search results are dominated by national operators, aggregators and location-focused competitors, all targeting the same valuable searches around coach hire, minibus hire, airport transfers, school trips, corporate travel, events and group journeys.

The challenge was to increase visibility for high-value commercial searches across the UK, while building the authority needed to compete against larger, more established brands.

The Problem

Strong Online Presence, But How Do We Turn That into Revenue?

The website had potential, but key commercial opportunities were being missed.

Service and location pages needed clearer search targeting, priority pages needed stronger internal linking and the site needed more useful content to capture people researching travel options before they were ready to enquire.

There was also an authority gap. Ranking nationally for coach and minibus hire terms requires more than publishing location pages. SMC needed credible external signals that showed Google and potential customers it was a trusted national operator.

Without a joined-up strategy, the business risked competing through isolated pages rather than building the wider commercial visibility and authority needed to win consistently across the UK.

The Strategy

SEO, Link building, digital pR & Social Media

We built the campaign around five connected areas: commercial search visibility, useful content, technical SEO, digital PR and strategic link building.

Targeting high-intent coach and minibus hire searches

We prioritised the terms most likely to generate enquiries, with a focus on nationwide coach hire and minibus hire searches.

This included improving location and service-led content so SMC could compete more effectively for commercially valuable terms such as coach hire Manchester, coach hire Cardiff, coach hire Liverpool, minibus hire Hull, minibus hire Stockport and minibus hire Coventry.

The focus was not on chasing irrelevant traffic. It was on improving visibility for searches made by people actively planning and booking group transport.

Building useful content around real customer journeys

We developed and improved content around the way customers actually research group travel.

This included booking guidance, service pages, event and trip content, comparison-style resources and information designed to answer key questions before a customer is ready to enquire.

This helped SMC capture demand earlier in the decision-making process, while creating more internal linking opportunities into priority commercial pages.

Improving technical SEO and site structure

We worked through technical and structural improvements across the site, including crawlability, image optimisation, page hierarchy, internal linking and indexation.

The aim was to make it easier for search engines to understand SMC’s services, location coverage and commercial priorities, while also creating clearer journeys for users moving between guides, service pages and booking routes.

Building national authority through digital PR

Alongside the core SEO work, we secured national press coverage through targeted digital PR activity.

This helped raise SMC’s profile beyond its own website, strengthened brand credibility and supported its ambition to compete as a recognised national coach hire operator.

The PR work was not treated as a standalone publicity exercise. It formed part of the wider search strategy, helping reinforce trust, recognition and authority in a crowded market.

Strengthening priority pages through link building

We supported the campaign with strategic link building focused on improving the authority of key commercial pages.

Rather than chasing link volume, the focus was on securing credible, relevant links that supported SMC’s nationwide visibility goals and helped its most important coach and minibus hire pages compete against established operators and comparison platforms.

By combining link building with digital PR, content and technical work, the campaign gave SMC stronger authority signals both on and off site.

The campaign delivered a major increase in commercial search visibility.

SMC Coach Hire now holds 224 commercial UK Top 10 rankings, up from 40 in the previous Ahrefs snapshot. That represents a 460% increase in page-one visibility across high-intent coach and minibus hire searches.

The campaign also generated 67 new commercial keyword rankings, with 56 entering directly into the UK Top 10, while commercial Top 3 rankings increased from three to 12.

Key ranking improvements included:

  • Coach hire Manchester moving from position 11 to position 3
  • Minibus hire Hull moving from position 21 to position 5
  • Coach hire Cardiff moving from position 22 to position 7
  • Coach hire Liverpool moving from position 19 to position 7
  • Minibus hire Stockport moving from position 23 to position 6.5
  • Minibus hire Coventry moving from position 40 to position 8
  • Coach hire Bristol moving from position 19.7 to position 8.5
  • Minibus hire Luton moving from position 28 to position 10

These improvements gave SMC a much stronger presence across the searches most likely to lead to coach and minibus hire enquiries.

The Outcome

SMC Coach Hire is no longer relying on a small number of pages or isolated location rankings to compete.

The campaign has created a stronger national SEO foundation, expanded page-one visibility for commercially valuable searches and strengthened the brand through a combined programme of content, technical SEO, digital PR and link building.

More importantly, it has put SMC in a far stronger position to keep growing visibility across the UK and compete for the coach and minibus hire enquiries that move the business forward.
